Italian Giorgio Nava Wins World Pasta Championship

The rolling, spinning, squashing and squeezing has stopped. The boiling pans slowly fizzled out. The World Pasta Championships, an event crammed with pasta masters - al dente of course, has come to end with the Italian Giorgio Nava taking top spot.

His dish was a low cost recipe using cavatelli pasta and a broccoli based sauce, a cheap dish the chef claimed was a nod to Italy's current difficult economic situation.

Nava told Reuters: ""My dish is something easy to make, anyone can cook it a home. After all, simple things are often the best...I presented a recipe that is very cheap but very tasty. Others competed with expensive fish-based recipes but right now, given the economic situation in Italy, it did not seem right to come forward with extravagant dishes."

The competition involved 24 cooks from all over the world who came together to demonstrate a range of varying pasta skills.

Last year's title was awarded to the Japanese chef Yoshi Yamada.
