Some of the world's biggest names in food gathered yesterday in San Sebastian to celebrate the closing of the Gastronomika-Euskadi Saboréala 2012, a gastronomic congress focused on avant-garde cuisine which is hosted in the city with the world's most Michelin stars per capita.
The final toast of the four-day gastro fest was made by none other than Elena Arzak and René Redzepi, the world's best female chef and the chef of the world's best restaurant. During the congress, Arzak presented dishes aimed at bringing out the emotional interaction of diners while Redzepi spoke about his quest for redefining what is edible. Guests were able to taste Redzepi's foraged ants and dishes from his restaurant Noma.
The 14th edition of Gastronomika was the most successful yet, according to organizers. The event welcomed 12,000 visitors and 1,500 participants, which included culinary heavy weights like Martín Berasategui, Albert Adrià, Quique Dacosta, Dani García and Massimo Bottura.
Last year, Gastronomika focused on the evolution of Latin American cuisine. This year the event paid homage to France's nouvelle haute cuisine and that country's greatest chefs. The theme was honored by renown pastry chefs Christian Escribá and Patricia Schmidt who built an enourmous Eiffel Tower made of macarons. Other highlights included a Noah's Arc degustation of six types of tortellini presented by Italy's Massimo Bottura, whose restaurant Osteria Francescana ranks 5th on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna.
