Fresh off announcing he is stepping down from his flagship restaurant, Gaston Acurio has confirmed he intends to venture into the world of gourmet fast food.

In an interview with Spanish news agency EFE, the Peruvian chef revealed he has plans to open a slew of gourmet fast food restaurants. The chef said he feels a “social responsibility” to feed many people and not just the few that can afford to visit fancy restaurants. “There’s just no excuse for not having artisanal fast food at a good price,’’ he explained.

Acurio is the latest Michelin-starred chef to join the fast food bandwagon. Most recently, California chefs Daniel Patterson and Roy Choi announced they are opening a fast food restaurant called loco'l with menu items selling for $6 or less. Earlier this year, José Andrés also revealed plans to establish his own chain of fast food restaurants.

Acurio said he firmly believes a great number of chefs will diversify their restaurant empires to include affordable and healthy fast food options in years to come.
