A man from London has gone on the run after receiving a six-year jail term for secretly importing garlic from China to the UK, the BBC reports.
Murahasam Natarajan was arrested last year when he tried to dodge £2 million in import tax by claiming he was importing fresh ginger which carries no duty.
The fraud was called "sophisticated, persistent and prolonged" by a judge who sentenced Natarajan in his absence to six-years in jail. Customs say the ploy saw more than 7,000 tons of garlic imported illegally.
It was only discovered after customs officers realized that the containers Natarajan was using were the perfect temperature for garlic but too cold to store dry ginger.
