Tokyo is the place to be this weekend as nine of the world's best chefs convene in the city for the second annual G9 summit. The 'G9' is shorthand for The World Summit of Gastronomy, a gastro-social event where top chefs gather to discuss the future of gastronomy, social responsibility and the world outside their kitchen.

The G9 is a venture led by the ambassadors of the Basque Culinary Center: Ferran Adria, Yukkio Hattori, Massimo Bottura, Michel Bras, René Redzepi, Gastón Acurio, Alex Atala, Heston Blumenthal and Dan Barber.

This year the G9 summit will be held 23-24th of September in collaboration with Hattori Nutrition College, which is headed by Yukkio Hattori. Special guests will be Harold McGee, author of On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the KitchenJoan Roca, chef from El Celler De Can Roca; and Sven Elverfeld from Aqua restaurant in Germany, ranked 22nd on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

Aside from discussing pressing topics in gastronomy, the chefs will have the opportunity to visit the zone affected by last year's earthquake and tsunami. They are expected to produce a type of manifesto pertaining to the role of chefs in the future.

Last year all but one of these chefs (Blumenthal) attended the first-ever G9 summit held in Peru. There, the chefs produced a document called the Lima Declaration, a type of open letter addressed to the chefs of tomorrow.
