Melon Sells for Over $15,000

We featured expensive fruits before on FDL and we've already discussed the culture of  buying expensive fruits as gifts in places like Japan and China.

Melons and cherries are often the presents most sought and in the latest case of fruit mania to strike Japan,  a persona  has paid  $15,000 for just one melon - that's 1.6 million yen.

The Ubari  melon which the person purchased is seen as a status symbol across Japan and sought-after because given as gifts, they can carry great significance.

The melon was purchased the first day of the season and usually buyers are looking for evenly matched lines and very fine patterns across the melon's skin. The most expensive fruits sell in pairs, with those that show symmetry and matching patterns fetching the most money.
