Remember how your parents told you not to eat with your eyes? Elena Arzak, the world's best female chef, believes we should reconsider that advice.
Food, like film, should be a sensorial experience full of color that catches your eye. That's part of the philosophy the acclaimed chef shared during 2nd edition of Film & Cook, a three day gastro-film festival held in Barcelona this weekend.
"Food is alive: it needs to entertain you and put you in touch with your senses," Arzak told ABC Spain during an interview with Gabriela Comella about her participation at the film festival. "Eating is seeing, smelling, and touching and film helps us capture these senses."
That's why Arzak, who works alongside her father Juan Mari at their three Michelin-starred Arzak Restaurant in San Sebastián, uses color to communicate emotions in their dishes. "I like tapping into moods: green transmits lightness, red saffron threads spark curiosity and black ink brings to mind the Basque genius."
During her inteview, the chef also joked about making a film about her restaurant, which ranks 8th on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna.
If Arzak were to make a film, she'd be following the steps of Andoni Luis Aduriz from Mugaritz and Gastón Acurio with his documentary Perú Sabe, which features Ferran Adria. We could see it happening, can you?
