French Company Generate Electricity from Waste Cheese

We already brought you news of a factory in the UK that is powered by energy created using waste mashed potato. Now a French company have upped the anti with a power station they say is powered on cheese.

The town of Albertville, in Savoie, is well known for its production of Beaufort cheese and the local power station is now putting whey leftover from the cheese production to create biogas.

By adding extra bacteria to the waste whey, the plant operators are able to generates methane that is then harnessed by the plant to heat water and produce electricity.

The Valbio factory, in Albertville, was built using 5 million Euros by The Union for the Producers of Beaufort cheese - an attempt to reduce their waste in a innovative way.

It’s reported that the plant is expecting to generate around 3,000,000 KWh a year.
