Zagat, the US–focused online restaurant guide, has conducted a survey of close to 10,000 diners, creating a snapshot of US dining trends in 2016.

9,845 diners across 26 US cities were questioned on some of the most common talking points around eating out currently, including photographing your food, the influence of social media, food trends and gimmicks, and top dining deal breakers.

US dining trends 2016 by Numbers

Photographing Food


75% of diners have picked a place to eat based on photos shared on social media.

44% admit to having photographed their food.

41% post photos whilst still at the table.

8% have dropped their phones into their food whilst trying to take a photo.

5% have asked another table if they could photograph their food.


Food Trends


57% say they are "over" gimmicky foods like rainbow bagels.

38% say they are “over” food hybrids/mashups.

53% of Honolulu diners love ramen.

34% of Orlando diners love quinoa.

33% of total respondents love avocado toast.
