Would You Like Clean Air With That?

In a strange story, the BBC reports how a restaurant in China has been caught charging diners for clean air.

The restaurant, in Zhangjiagang city, Jiangsu Province, was charging customers a one yuan ($0.15) cover charge to cover the cost of purifying air inside the restaurant.

After diners complained about the practice, officials stepped in and explained to the owners that it was not legal to pass on such a cost.

A city official is quoted as saying: ‘it wasn't the diners' choice to breathe filtered air, so it could not be sold as a commodity’.

In a country that has problems with clean air, some social media users have actually welcomed the charge, explaining that they would happily pay more for cleaner air.

Think about this the next time you’re charged extra for your condiments.
