Alex Atala, the most renown chef in Brazil, is set to open a bar next year in the city of Sao Paulo. The bar will be located in the historic neighborhood of antigo Riviera and is scheduled to open in 2013.
Atala, whose restaurant D.O.M. ranks fourth in the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, has teamed up with nightclub owner Fecundo Guerra. Together, they plan to renovate and reappropriate the name of the legendary bar that once stood there: the bar Riviera, which used to be a gathering space for leftist intelligence officers.
The space measures 984-square feet (300 sq. meters) and will be split in two levels: a ground floor with wrap-around balconies and an uppper level that will house a stage. The bar will be located on the corner of rua Consolacao and avenida Paulista.
Atala will work on the menu, which will include snacks and small plates. The house specialty will be the royal - a sandwich made of an omelette. ''They say it was crap, hopefully our recipe will make you leave,'' joked Atala during an interview with Brazilian press.
