The summer inspires people to try new things, especially when it comes to drinks. Introducing the latest summer drinks trend: frosé, a rosé–based alcoholic slushie.

The frosé alcoholic slushie can be made a number of ways, usually by combining rosé, vermouth and puréed strawberries, possibly with a little dash of lemon juice, or any number of added extras. As The Telegraph reports, bars in New York and London have been inundated with requests for the alcoholic slushie by sun worshipping Instagrammers.

Our resident wine expert Ilka Sirén is not convinced: “If you want to do this, which I do not endorse, you might want to go for a fruit-forward new world rosé. Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec perhaps would do the trick. I’d guess the ice or slush dilutes the rosé quite a bit so go for a rosé with more intense red colour. You also might like a bit of sweetness in your “frosé” so look for a semi-sweet wine. If you are a true believer why not go all-in and empty a bottle of off-dry Bandol into your slushie machine. Don’t do that in France though, or you might be shot on sight.”

If you’re screaming into your wine glass right now, wondering why anyone would want to jazz–up a perfectly enjoyable, crisply cold rosé then you may not want to read our report on an even more controversial summer 2016 drinks trend: Champagne on the rocks.

2016 – the year wine got that bit colder.
