Dan Barber and Albert Adrià are two chefs that haven't ceased to make headlines this year. Their unique approach to food, along with talent and creativity, has garnered them the title of the 2013 Chefs of the Year, awarded by The Daily Meal.

For their third annual Chef of the Year awards, The Daily Meal consulted with previous winners Grant Achatz, José Andres, Massimo Bottura and René Redzepi. Afterwards, New York-based Barber was chosen as the 2013 American Chef of the Year while Adrià, who is lives in Barcelona, was selected as his international counterpart.

Contenders for the 2013 chef of the year included Alice Waters from Chez Panisse in Berkeley and Elena Arzak from the Michelin-starred Arzak restaurant in San Sebastián, Spain. Thomas Keller, Brazilian chef Alex Atala, and Yoshi Takasawa from Japan were also in the running, among others.

Barber, who runs Blue Hill New York and Stone Barns, has distinguished himself as a chef passionate about seasonal and sustainable cuisine. He's a proponent of humane foie gras and a member of the G9 international chef congress. Barber was also recently named as a ''god of food'' by Time magazine.

Adrià, who has slowly stepped out of the shadows of his famous brother Ferran, runs a handful of restaurants in Barcelona including Tickets and 41º, both of which recently received one Michelin star. The chef's plans for 2014 include opening a Mexican restaurant and releasing the documentary Deconstructing Albert.
