Did you know the name translates to ''pick me up'' and its origins are obscure? Five Italian region claim to have invented it: Tuscany, Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Guilia (all of which are northern regions for the exception of Tuscany).

According to The Tiramisu blog, this dessert can be traced back to the 16th century to the court of Florence. Legend has it that Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de Medici, was the one who introduced his favorite dessert to the court. Although some claim the dessert is a more recent invention, being created in the Veneto region back in the 1970s.
