Salted Lassi, The Refreshing Summer Drink You'll Love

If you eat Indian food you may be very familiar with mango lassi, a thick smoothie-like drink made from mangos, yogurt and spices. However, you don’t always have to go down the sweet route when it comes to lassi. If you are looking for another refreshing drink you may want to consider making plain salted lassi.

Unlike mango lassis, plain lassis aren’t loaded with sugar. Instead, they have a bit of savory tang because they are made with a blend of yogurt, water and a sprinkle of salt.

Some salted lassis are even enhanced with crushed cumin seeds, which are known to have a cooling effect and are the perfect antidote to a hot summer day. Others are topped off with mint leaves.

Making plain salted lassi is easy as pie. Just use two parts yogurt to two parts water. Add the desired amount of salt then blend together. Here’s a simple recipe you’ll love:

Salted Lassi Recipe
2 cups of plain whole yogurt
1 cup of filtered water
1/2 teaspoon of salt

Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend until frothy. Alternatively, blend with a whisk or fork. You could also serve over ice, if desired.

If you've never had salted lassi before don't let the savory aspect of the drink deter you. It's really quite tasty and the perfect way to wash down spicy dishes like gobi matar (pictured below).
