The Kikkoman Soy Sauce Story

Kikkoman Soy Sauce is a special kind of sauce - it has a history that over 300 years old and a story that would seem more apt in a Hollywood movie scene than a modern day food production plant.

The legend has it that after a great battle in Osaka over 400-years ago a great samurai killed himself after realizing he faced defeat. His wife, fearing her own life, fled and began learning to make soy sauce when she settled along the Edo River.

For over 19 generations her family have continued to produce this soy sauce passing on the recipe and a set of 16 codes the next generation must follow to ensure the protection of their great recipe.

In this short film the Academy Award nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker traces this story and examines each of the 16 creeds that govern the production of Kikkoman Soy Sauce.

Codes such as, 'Approach All Living Things With Love' and 'Faith is the Source of Virtue' - a beautiful set of rules that can be applied as easily to life as the production of soy sauce.
