What Makes Champagnes Different? Here's How To Choose The Right Bottle

The expansive world of champagne can be hard to navigate. With so many brands and varieties it can be difficult to choose the perfect bottle of champagne.

If you are in need of a crash course look no further than this video below. Shot by the folks at Potluck, it breaks down all champagne essentials and, trust us, they is a lot to learn.

How To Choose Champagne

For starters, it's important to recognize that not all bubbly is champagne. If you are wine lover you may already know this but Champagne isn't just a beverage, it's a place. Only wines that come from that particular French region can be designated as such. So if the label says it's prosecco or cava, for instance, then it's not champagne. It doesn't mean it's not tasty, it's just not the original champagne.

There is also the matter of sweetness. Have you ever bought a bottle of champagne only to be turned off by its icky sweet flavor? Then distinguishing between champagne varietals is essential.

On the label you'll find designations such as Brut, Sec and Demi Sec - so which one is the sweetest? That would be demi sec. So if you want to pair champagne with appetizers then a Brut is a better choice.

See how much you've learned so far? That's just the tip of the iceberg. Take a look below for the ulimate guide to champagne:
