How To Make Bone Broth In A Slow Cooker

Bone broth. Stock. Call it what you want but don't settle for store bought. A homemade bone broth takes less than five minutes of prep time when using a slow cooker so it's easy to fit into any schedule.

Just drop all the ingredients in this nifty appliance and let it work its magic while you go about your day. Once the bone broth is ready you can use it in place of water when cooking to add depth of flavor to beans, grains, soups and sauces.

Of course, another popular way to consume bone broth is to drink it. In which case you should season it to your liking, pour it in a mug and sip.

Slow Cooker Bone Broth
This recipe was designed for a 4.5 quart slow cooker so adapt it according to the size of your appliance.


1 chicken carcass
1 bay leaf
4 whole peppercorns
2 celery sticks
1 large carrot 
1 large unpeeled onion, sliced in half
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • Lay the onion, carrot and celery at the bottom the slow cooker. Cover with the chicken carcass. It's ok if it has bits of meat and skin.
  • Toss in  bay leaf and black peppercorns.
  • Fill the slow cooker with water, leaving about one inch and of space from the rim.
  • Add the apple cider vinegar (this will help draw out the minerals in the bones).
  • Set on low and cook for at least 12 hours. If you can, try to cook it for 24 hours. This will add richness and depth of flavor to the bone both.
  • When it's ready just strain and store in a glass container. Let cool before refrigerating.

Extra touches

You can jazz up bone broth with a variety of herbs and spices. If you intend to use the broth as a base for beans it's a nice idea to toss some cilantro stems in the slow cooker. You could also add crushed garlic cloves, dried chilies or even a teaspoon of turmeric if you prefer a nice golden color. The possibilities are endless!


This same method can be used to make beef bone broth in the slow cooker. Just make sure to roast the bones in the oven before putting in the slow cooker. This will result in a more intense flavor and color.
