In this tough economic climate is it possible to dine Michelin for just 5 euros? According to five acclaimed European chefs, the answer is: absolutely.

The question was posed to the chefs by a group of European newspapers to coincide with the European Council meeting in Brussels. As politicians discuss the continent's economic crisis, decorated chefs like Anne-Sophie Pic, Fergus Henderson, and Ferran Adrià have stepped up to the plate by offering delicious and budget-friendly dishes for under 5 euros.

Anne-Sophie Pic, who is the only female French chef with three Michelin stars, developed an entire menu with dishes under 5 euros: pumpkin soup, shad en papillote with baby leeks, and tarte tatin. Fergus Henderson, chef at St. John in London, took the pasta route, proposing a dish of penne pasta with cabbage and parmessan cheese. Ferran Adrià recommends two fried eggs with asparagus or chicken thighs with mushrooms, which were a family meal staple at his restaurant elBulli.

Italy's number one chef Massimo Bottura, from Osteria Francescana, created a simple but tasty risotto with parmessan cheese and black pepper. Germany's Vincent Klink from Wielandshohe restaurant thinks 'Malfatti' ricotta cheese and spinach dumplings are the perfect meal on a budget.
