Salvador Dali's Les Diners du Gala Re-Issue: Surreal Meals for Today

The lavish and fantastical cookbook by the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, Les Diners du Gala is being reissued for the first time since it first made it to press some 40 years ago.

Set to hit the shelves in time for Xmas this could be the solution for the hard to please gourmand in your life with a sense of decadence, or at least an impressive addition to the coffee table book selection.

Published in 1973, there are thought to be just 400 surviving copies of the original book, making it a sought after collectors item with a price tag to match. By republishing, the publisher hopes "to bring it to today’s kitchens" they told The Guardian.

136 recipes are detailed in over 12 chapters illustrated by Dalí, and organised by meal courses, including aphrodisiacs. Recipes include such delicacies as “Thousand Year Old Eggs,” “Veal Cutlets Stuffed With Snails,” “Frog Pasties,” and “Toffee with Pine Cones.” Needless to say you'll need an eclectic set of ingredients to fulfill some of the more flamboyant recipes, plus an equally adventurous set of diners.

The Catalan painter was famous for his fantastical food world and off the wall dinner parties where wild animals, flamboyant outfits and outrageous behaviour were all the ingredients of his signature nights hosted with his wife.

Dali fans and food lovers alike will doubtless have a place for the golden jacketed retro feel book, released by Taschen from 20 November for the more modest price of around $35.

Have a look at some more of his quirky dining habits as well as the recipe for Dali Spaghetti.
