The concept of slow cooking seems out of kilter with today’s fast-paced, technologically driven world, doesn’t it? Well not really. With millennials driving the foodie revolution, where traditional techniques hold as much value as contemporary ones, it was only a matter of time before someone tried to update the slow cooking method and introduced a programmable slow cooker controlled by an app.

Oliver's Army

Step forward Oliver, a new programmable slow cooker, or crock-pot, designed by San Francisco design firm Matter. Though traditionally the very idea of slow cooking is to throw everything into a pot and leave it – minimal fuss – Oliver has six compartments that are controlled by an app, which adds each ingredient to the main mixture at different times to ensure even cooking.

So far, so great right? Well, the app also allows you to browse thousands of online recipes that tell you exactly which ingredients to use and how to prepare them, and then Oliver does the rest. So it is in fact a very traditional slow cooker, just with a few added extras. Who are we kidding – this might be the ultimate slow cooker.

Oliver will be piloted in September. Head over to Matter’s website for more details and why not check out these tips on how to get the best out of your traditional slow cooker.
