An apple a day can do much more than boost your health. Apples can also generate electricity. That's what a science-obsessed photographer from Maine has discovered.

The creative genius in question is Caleb Charland, who specializes in combining photography and physics. Caleb spent countless hours preparing for the image pictured above. It took him 11 hours to wire and insert zinc-plated nails into 300 apples that were still hanging from a tree. The energy was generated by the chemical reaction between the acid  in the apples and the zinc. Pretty cool, huh?

Caleb has also developed ways to get electricity from a variety of fruits, vinegar and coins. You can learn more about his experimental science photography in this article from Discover.
