Taking the idea of an open kitchen to a whole new level, this hi–tech table from Swiss–German design studio Kram/Weisshaar allows you to cook, keep food warm and chill drinks while your guests dine.

The 3m by 80cm SmartSlab Table consists of a ceramic top layer made of an innovative fire, scratch and microbe–proof material called SapienStone 6mm thick, under which you’ll find induction heating rings for cooking and heating elements that keeps guests’ plates a constant 42.5 degrees centigrade – the temperature recommended by chef-patron of the best restaurant in the world, Massimo Bottura, who Kram/Weisshaar worked with on the project – and cooling elements too. The hi–tech table's circuitry can also be customised to allow for even more wizardry, including touch-control panels and Wi-Fi base stations.

Kram/Weisshaar first showed the hi-tech furniture at Milan Design Week 2016, where Bottura cooked on the SapienStone (which is made in Modena, home to Bottura's Osteria Francescana restaurant). They were so inundated with interest for “what was initially mostly a prototype/technology demonstrator” that they will be going to market they tell us, but not until early 2017. Check out the video below to find out more about how the SmartSlab Table is made and works.
