If chefs are going to be part of the solution to feeding an ever more populated world, they’re going to need help generating ideas, especially when it comes to being more creative with the kind of products that are often taken for granted or overlooked in favour of more luxury items, not forgetting the need to push the boundaries of gastronomy and create ever more interesting cuisine in kitchens, today.

That’s where Gastronomixs comes in. It’s an online brainstorming tool designed by chefs for chefs, a database of thousands of combinations of ingredients, dishes and techniques – “culinary building blocks” – with over 20,000 users, currently.

The bright sparks behind it behind it are chef Jeroen van Oijen and food designer Inge Meijs, who describe the site as a kind of culinary lego. You may remember Meijs was invited to speak about Gastronomixs at Food on the Edge 2016, a video of which you can watch further down.

First launched in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2012, the tool is being rolled out globally, starting with the UK and Ireland this week. Subscription costs €6 a month or €60 a year, though they are currently offering a two week free trial.

If you’re tired of online recipes that don’t work, it’s worth noting that every recipe on the site – the database of which will grow, as the tool takes on a more international favour – has been tested by a team of professional chefs.
