According to a 2015 study, 92% of the online population uses emojis. But given the rapid growth of food culture, it must be hard for developers to keep up with the demand for new food emojis. Indeed, even universal foods have been overlooked in the past – this campaign has lobbied for a dumpling emoji, for instance.

Breakfast Emojis

However, a new set of food emojis from The Unicode Consortium, the body that approves international software standards for characters and letters, should go some way to sating the appetites of emoji-hungry foodies. Though a Japanese water cake emoji doesn’t look in the offing any time soon – sorry, everyone – Unicode 9, which contains 72 new emojis available from 21 June, does have breakfast well covered, with bacon, egg, croissant, pancakes and, of course, avocado emojis.

Late Night Snacks

Additional food emojis include paella, cucumber, kiwi fruit and carrot. There are also four varieties of stuffed flatbread emoji for those late night snacks of the doner kebab/falafel variety. The drooling face emoji may come in handy too.

Unicode approves new emojis on an annual basis. See the full list of the 72 new emojis for 2016 here and see mock–ups in an Apple style in the Emojipedia video below.
