Looking for an out-of-this-world way to learn the structure of the planet? Behold the Earth cake - a stunning pastry representation of all the layers of our planet complete with an inner core, outer core, mantle and crust.

This terrestial creation was the work of talented Australian baker Rihannon from Cakecrumbs blog. The self-taught cook was commissioned by her sister, who is studying education, to bake a fun cake for a geology class at an elementary school.

Faced with the challenged, Rihannon thought it was a mission impossible. How on earth could she create a sphere inside a sphere inside a sphere? Then plan B came along:

"Plan B involved baking a cake inside a cake inside a cake… With the inner core, outer core and mantle all cake-d up, it was time for the crust. Chocolate buttercream filled that role… I added a little white and marbled it into the fondant to make some clouds. I hand cut all the continents from fondant, then painted them with a gel paste mixture using a dry brush technique. This process all up took me about 6 hours and was the most arduous process."
