For the first time in its 70-year history, the legendary Florentine gelateria Vivoli il Gelato has crossed the Atlantic. The shop's first U.S. location - in fact, its only one outside of Florence - opened yesterday at Macy's Flagship Herald Square in New York City.
Vivoli il Gelato is a family-run artisanal gelateria inside Stella 34 Trattoria, the Italian restaurant located on Macy's sixth floor with stellar views of the Empire State Building.
The gelateria offers an assortment of nine gelati and three sorbetti, all of which have no preservatives or additves and are served in cups per family tradition.
Flavors include the very popular Crema, a type of custard rich in egg yolks, and Riso, a type of rice pudding gelato made with Arborio rice. The sorbetti offerings are Pera (pear), Ananas (pineapple) and Mandarino (tangerine).
Silvana Vivoli will manage the new shop at Macy's. The gelateria was first opened by her grandfather Raffaelo Vivoli back in the 1930s. Since then it has become known for its craftmanship and dedication to authentic Tuscan flavors.
''My family's gelato heritage and respected recipes are the core of our success...Each flavor catches you at the first bite and leaves you wanting more,'' Silvana Vivoli told QRS Magazine.
