Plans for the James Beard Public Market, a community endorsed, daily, year-round, indoor-outdoor marketplace have been released for downtown Portland, USA. The market will feature more than 50 permanent vendors, 40 day tables, full-service restaurants, a teaching kitchen and event space. In the novel design no space in the facility will go unused, including a green roof where visitors can enjoy the view from terraces.
Whilst Portland has long since held a strong reputation as a food destination, boasting countless farms, vineyards, breweries, farmers markets and restaurants, it has lacked a public market space to showcase its produce for decades.
The James Beard Public Market proposed will give producers and food supliers the opportunity to market and sell their produce directly to the consumer. Likewise consumers will have the opportunity to speak to the producers and purchase fresh food.
The aptly named public market takes the namesake of James Beard, a famous chef and writer and Portland native who helped start the movement for fresh local food in the United States. In line with these intentions the market will also promote sustainable agricultural practices, and encourage healthy eating to contribute to the community well being.
Oslo and New York-based Snøhetta created their market concept further to feedback gathered from farmers, shoppers and vendors and feedback has been positive.
Far from just being a buiding the James Beard Market is intended to connect the Porland community, the region and it's plentiful produce. The market is projected to be completed in 2018.
