Best Bagels in NYC: Industrial vs Artisanal, A Crispy Challenge

New Yorkers certainly know their bagels and are perennially on the look out for the best one in town. The Consumer Reports magazine decided to help them in their quest and embarked on a “bagel tour” (among Thomas’ Bagel Thins, Dunkin’ Donuts, Lender’s, and Costco’s Kirkland Signature) to find the perfect combination of crispy crust, internal “chewiness” and freshly baked flavour; it also took into account nutritional values as well as sesame seed, poppy seed, onion and other variations. The result of the experiment, they found, are not necessarily what you’d expect.

It turns out, says the report, that chain-shop bagels can be as good as the “artisanal” ones. The fresh bagels from Dunkin’ Donuts, the frozen ones from Lender’s and even the packaged, room-temperature ones from CostCo are faring very well against the most genuine article from dedicated bagel shops, both in terms of taste and nutrition. In fact, says Consumer Reports, these chain-shop bagels are “the best choices”.

The New York Post however took exception to that, viewing the suggestions of the report as blasphemous. “You’d think a magazine based in Yonkers, just a hop from the world’s greatest bagels, would know better”, says the paper.
