That eagerly awaited time of year has finally arrived when hundreds of New York City restaurants open their doors with menus at a fraction of the usual price. Foodies who've been holding out for the bi-annual event, New York City Restaurant Week, will have the chance to flock to some of the big apple's top dining spots for a prix-fixe lunch at $25 and dinner at $38, between January 18 and February 5, 2016.

Hundreds of restaurants will be participating throughout five boroughs, so be sure you do your research and book ahead to snag that table you'd always wanted they're expected to disappear fast. Check the website for participating restaurants.

Take your pick from Daniel Boulud's restaurant empire, including Cafe Boulud, with a three course menu offering a trio of starters, mains and desserts including duck terrine, pot au feu and chocolate semi-freddo; Nobu , serving up a special menu including black cod miso on limestone lettuce, Arctic Char with crispy baby spinach finishing with Kabocha Tiramisu or Alain Ducasse's upscale eatery Benoit, a guarantee for traditional French fare with flair.

While Saturdays are excluded and Sundays optional, restaurant week offers up a good opportunity to explore some other venues at affordable prices. Get snap happy while you're there too - there's a $50 prize up for grabs for the best photo of the week.

Don't know where to start? The folks at Thrilist have put together a list of their 20 NYC restaurants worth visiting. Pick your favourites and start booking.
