Slolwy but surely, the world has taken notice of the vast culinary talent across Latin America. Thanks to ambassadors like Peru's Gastón Acurio and Alex Atala from Brazil the region will be in the spotlight this September with the launch of Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by Cusqueña and held in Peru.

Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants will be held September 4th in Lima, Peru's capital city.

Lima is home to a host of restaurants currently in the top 100 list of World's Best Restaurants list: Acurio's Astrid & Gaston, which ranks 14th (the highest climb on this year's list), Central by Virgilio Martinez coming it at number 50 (new entry), and Malabar from chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, which placed 76th.

Currently, the highest ranking Latin American restaurant in the World's 50 Best Restaurants list is Atala's D.O.M. in Sao Paulo. D.O.M. earned the sixth spot on the list and was named the Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in South America.

Other Brazilian restaurants that made it onto the top 100 list of the World's Best Restaurants include Helena Rizzo's Mani in Sao Paulo, a new entry that came it at number 46, and the eponymousRoberta Sudbrack in Rio de Janeiro, which took the 80th spot.

Of course, no talk of Latin American haute cuisine would be complete without mentioning Mexico. The country has two restaurants in the World's 50 Best Restaurants list: Enrique Olvera's Pujol at number 17 and Mikel Alonso's Biko, which holds the 31st spot.

Drawing inspiration from the worldwide interest in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants will feature individual awards categories:

  • The Cusqueña Best Restaurant in Latin America
  • Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by Diners Club International®
  • The Veuve Clicquot Latin America’s Best Female Chef Award
  • Chefs’ Choice Award sponsored by Telefónica
  • One to Watch Award sponsored by BBVA
  • Individual country awards.

The results of the list will be published online as they are announced at the first Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards in Lima on September 4th.
