Tomato ketchup is one of the world’s favourite condiments, but do you actually know what goes into it, apart from the obvious? Do you know how ketchup is made?
The guys over at the Science Channel's How It's Made have got it covered. Having previously shown us how one of the most mysterious condiments of all, Worcestershire sauce, is made, they travel to an organic tomato ketchup factory to discover how ketchup is made.
The recipe for ketchup is pretty universal: tomatoes, onion powder, spices (which can include allspice, cinnamon, garlic and cloves), sugar, salt and vinegar. But, this being organic ketchup, the sugar in this case is substituted for natural agave nectar.
