Meat versus vegetables is a ageless debacle. Throughout the years, both vegetarians and carnivores have made good arguments that support their preferences. But would you change your eating habits if one diet could make you live longer?
In what may seem as a death blow to carnivores, scientists have now found evidence that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters. An ongoing study which is being conducted by Loma Linda University in California found that a plant-based diet can expand a man's life by almost 10 years and that women could live six years longer, living up to 83.3 years and 85.7 years, respectively.
What is peculiar about the Adventist Health Study 2 is that it tracked the eating habits and lifestyle of of 96,000 Seventh-day Adventists from the United States and Canada. The study specifically targets Seveth-day Adventist because their religion promotes vegetarianism and discourages smoking, drinking and drug use, according to the Huffington Post.
The study also had great news for vegans. Researchers found that, on average, vegans are 30 pounds lighter than carnivores. Vegans and vegetarians were also found to be less insulin resistant than meat eaters. The message is clear, eating an abundance of fruits and vegetables can only do a body good.
